Thanks Kevin - that's how I felt looking at Nathan's work!

Hi Eric, New to your site from W. Wray's site.
Beautiful work. Such clarity with so much depth and so little detail. Painting simple is the hardest to do, especially to make it work. I painted with gouache for 20 years, are you using paint in tubes or jars?

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the compliments...

I'm using tubes of watercolor plus a tube of white gouache. I'm approaching it (at least in these sketches) as though I was painting with oil - which I am more accustomed to.

What did you paint for 20 years with gouache?

Hi Eric,
I painted almost everything, mostly products, being in Detroit I slid into photo realistic paintings of cars. Also did a lot of storyboards and comps of cars with gouache. I really wish I could loosen up like you, but I guess that's what makes our art different from everyone else. I always wonder if those that paint loose would like to paint tighter, and if those who paint tight would like to paint looser. Any way, your paintings are terrific, about the best compliment is when an artist wishes he/she could paint like that. I look forward to seeing your work

I just visited your blog Stephen, really nice work. I especially liked some of the smaller pieces. Maybe because that's what I've been painting lately. The small pieces feel so alive.

Thanks again for your kind comments.

hi Eric, I don't have your email so:Thanks for the comments. I am not sure why you are using gouache, are you painting dark to light like oils? I am not sure about the permanence of gouache, I know
our illustrations always faded a lot. Maybe the watercolor with the white will be more long lasting. I will have to try that.
You can also try Casein paint if they still make it. It is water based like gouache but paints more like oil.
My boss used to paint in it, and the surface was very nice, matte and very uniform. The casein will date me, I turned 61 last month. Hope to paint till I drop.
Please feel free to ask any questions as I do have a lot of work under my belt and love to help other painters. Don't take that the wrong way, you are a terrific painter.
I checked out a few of the artists linked from your site, a few I already knew and liked. E,Tiemens blew me away, this paintings should be in museums. What a knowledge of the masters.
I really like Alex Kanevsky a lot to, he shows in a gallery down the street from my gallery in NY. We have had shows at the same time this year and two years ago.
He is a great painter and it is nice to see them up close and lick the paint off them! William Wray what can you say. I will check out more as I get time.
I am working on a B&W oil painting for a B&W show for the gallery here, i will show you when its done.Happy painting.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the tips. I'm using the gouache like oils in the sense that I can paint light over dark and vice versa. I'm actually starting with a toned surface which works great for sketching. I do want to do some paintings with a more traditional watercolour method.

I had another friend (former book cover illustrator) recommend casein. I'll have to look into that sometime. My understanding is that gouache has lightfast colors as well as transient colors just like other pigments... so I'm not too worried about fading.

I'm glad you are enjoying some of the artists which I've linked to. That's half the fun of blogging.. no? I wish there were more Kanevsky originals around here... I have a friend who works at Sony Imageworks who went to NY to buy and original. It's very nice!

Yes - please do share the B&W painting when you've finished!

Thanks again...

Hi Eric, Just wanted to touch base with you.
The B&W painting was posted on my site Sept 24. The opening is this Saturday. I'm still having fun and am very happy with the blogging scene. Everyone is such fun and so helpful. There are some really great artists working daily, keeps the standard high.
Thanks, Steve
