Cambria Coast

I painted this one in the studio. I think this is starting to look more like my oils. I'm trying to treat the gouache paint like oils... picking up piles of paint instead of all washes. The hardest thing to get used to is the values changing as the paint dries.

5" x 7" gouache on paper

Psa 89:9 You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.

This is beautiful. I'm completely blown away by the fact that when I enlarge the image all I see is dabs of color that almost don't make sense. Yet when viewed smaller it totally reads as an outdoor scene.

BTW, where did you get this brown paper? When I took Nathan Fowkes' class he showed us these little binders, but said they don't make them anymore.

Thank you Silvina!

I got this particular brown sketchbook at Borders book store. It's made by Paperchase and I am not sure if the paper is acid free. I've emailed them and have yet to receive a reply.

There is another book made by Canson which has brownish acid free heavy weight paper. I'm told it can usually be found in the "craft" section rather than the fine art section of some art stores.

I'm currently experimenting with Arches watercolor paper too... It's much toothier!

Hi Eric..

I really like your spirit of experiment & exploration. I understand your reply to my last comment.

By the way I do not know if you live near Pasadena CA or if you paint from life model occasionally ... I just painted at Charles Hu studio last Thursday and he has open a new uninstructed model session on Thursday ... very nice studio, set up and people.

Copy this web address for info if you are interested

or just go to my studio blog it has a link to the info too ... check it out....I thought it would be nice to occasionally paint with more friends.

happy painting to you

these look like oils. I gave up on acrylics years ago because of the value change thing. Every time I added water the value changed. Then it dried and the value changed AGAIN!
