Pomegranates
8" x 10" oil on linen panel
Happy New Year everybody! I continue with my series of still lifes. I find that painting these as opposed to plein air landscapes really works with my schedule and family life. I'm able to set up somewhere in the house instead of going off into the garage studio to paint. I'm isolated enough from my family as it is. I usually throw down a piece of black velvet which absorbs much of the light and makes for a nice value contrast.

I even pulled out the quinacridone red for this one. It worked nicely for some of the cooler reds.

Happy New Year to you and yours Eric!
Nice ones my friend! -J
Thank you Jennifer... I didn't have as much trouble NOT eating these as I do the pies and goodies!
James - did I detect a Brazilian accent when you said "friend"? I heard "fren" :) Lunch soon?
these are so nice Eric! I'm glad you are posting again!
Thanks Donald... I'm aiming at more consistency in the posting.
Eric -- Beautiful pomegranates! You're right on about still lifes vs. landscapes for time and availability. I've been thinking along the same lines lately and might be delving into something similar. -- Kevin
Kevin: Delve away my friend! I've also started experimenting with a custom box for controlling the light bounce with still lifes. My next post will show a painting done that way. It's basically a cardboard box with a window cut out on the top in which to aim your light through. You also cut out the side of the box facing you (duh) so you can see into it - but this basically give you fine control over bounce light. Stronger shadow shapes and modeling this way...

Thank you Eric - and back at you with the New Year wishes.
